Ending Digraph Phonemic Awareness Picture Sort

Picture sorts are a quick and easy tool we use often in early childhood classrooms. Kids enjoy them, and there are so many different skills practice with a well-designed picture sort. With this free printable ending digraph phonemic awareness picture sort we’re helping kids practice an early reading skill. In this activity, we are isolating the ending digraph sound with a set of pictures and sorting those pictures by the ending digraph. The emphasis is on what children hear, and it does not include printed words at this stage.

This Ending Digraph Phonemic Awareness Picture Sort can be done in whole group using a pocket chart, in small groups as part of skill practice, or in your literacy center for additional independent practice.

I recommend doing the picture sort first in the whole group to ensure your children are familiar with the vocabulary. Once they’ve done it once or twice, you can repeat it in small groups or centers.

Game cards can be placed in a bag or face down in a stack so kids can draw them at random.

An answer key has been provided to see the words associated with each picture. The answer keys can be put on a binder ring so kids can check their work once they have finished the sort.

The recording sheet is a helpful tool to help teachers see how children are doing with the concept so they can decide if additional practice is needed.
